After surgery to repair her damaged heel and Achilles, team ultra runner Stephanie Howe Violett spent a year working through apprehension and physical pain, thinking she may never run again. “To say I was happy to be racing again is an understatement. It was an emotional day for me. Mostly there were tears of joy at the finish line. Tears that had been building for an entire year. It took so much emotional and physical drive to get through the past year. There were months of frustration where I felt I'd never be a runner again. Months of cross training and trying to re-learn how to walk again. Months of self-doubt and envy of my peers as they ran race after race while I sat at home. And then, in December I decided that my body was ready to try. I summoned up the courage to start The North Face 50-mile, despite knowing I was not quite the runner I was previously. But I decided to try.” #RaceFace

"This is madness," I mutter under my breath. What were we thinking? For now the beautiful scenery serves as some sort of distraction from the discomfort, but soon the only light will come from the pale beams of our headlamps reflecting off the frozen track we follow. What then? I shut down my mind and sink into the rhythm of each step. I struggle and sweat up endless hills not knowing how far away the cabin is, with its promise of warmth, or if it even really exists. Tough but oh, so very worth it.' "I'm a big fan of those moments no one is thinking about — where everyone's just ‘in it’. Here my friends were passing through on a Washington road trip , we camped out on a ridge line the night before and then dropped down into this epic spot on the Trinity River. We spent the whole day frolicking in the water, and when the sun started to get low we went our separate ways. I headed south and they continued north. It was a top notch weekend."
