Cecily Brown

Instagram: ac_kaf

K11 Cultural Icon Art Diary: Two Neo-Expressionist Masters: David Salle and Cecily Brown

KAF and K11 Founder Adrian Cheng said: “I recently came across an interesting painting at a Parisian gallery by American neo-expressionist artist David Salle called “Saturday Afternoon”. In this particular work, Salle cleverly meshes disjunctive elements from the American golden era to create a dynamic visual collage that expresses the leisurely lifestyle of a Saturday afternoon. Another work that has left a strong impression on me recently is the painting “Can Can” by also popular New York based artist Cecily Brown. At first glance, what I saw on “Can Can” were Can Can dancers doing their high-kicks and their entanglement with their intoxicated audience. But when I looked at the work for a second time, the dancers no longer took center stage but instead have blended and became a part of the entire work in a very sensual and rhythmic manner. In my view, Salle is more of a visual author while Brown is more of a visual lyrical composer. Both painters used their highly unique styles to pave new paths in the history of painting.” Instagram: ac_kaf
